Registry Error in PowerPoint 2007

You receive an error message when you try to open a file type that was blocked by your registry policy settings in PowerPoint 2007.

When you try to open a presentation that was saved in a Microsoft PowerPoint format, the presentation does not open. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
You are attempting to open a file type that is blocked by your registry policy setting.

Cause of this error

This issue may occur if an administrator has restricted the types of presentations that you can open in Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007. An administrator can set a registry key to restrict this functionality.

For PowerPoint 2007, the registry key can be set in the 2007 Office System Administrative Templates.

2 Ways to solve this error

Option 1: Use a trusted location, or create an exempt location
In PowerPoint 2007, if you trust the file that you want to open, you can move the file to a trusted location to override the registry policy settings.

Option 2: Disable the restriction on opening presentations of certain types
    1. Exit PowerPoint.
    2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.

    3. Locate and then click one of the following registry subkeys, as appropriate for your version of PowerPoint:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\12.0\PowerPoint\Security\FileOpenBlock

    4. After you select the subkey that is specified in step 3, locate the DWORD value. The "More Information" section describes the different DWORD values based on the version of PowerPoint.
For example, if the opening of the .mht file type is restricted, locate the "HtmlFiles" DWORD value in the registry for the FileOpenBlock subkey. When you change the value data of "HtmlFiles" from 1 to 0, you can open the .mht files.

    5. Right-click the DWORD value that you want, and then click Modify.
    6. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
    7. On the File menu, click Exit to exit Registry Editor.

PowerPoint 2007

To restrict the types of files that you can open or save in PowerPoint 2007, an administrator can use the 2007 Office System Administrative Templates to configure the registry on a client computer. (Also see, PPT to PDF, PPT to AVI, PDF to PPT, PPT to DVD)

The following table contains the DWORD names that an administrator can add to the registry to restrict certain file types by using the FileOpenBlock subkey. Additionally, the table contains the corresponding file types that are restricted.

OpenXmlFiles - .pptx, .pptm, .potx, .potm, .ppsx, .ppsm, .ppam, .thms, .xml
BinaryFiles - .ppt, .pot, .pps, .ppa
HtmlFiles - .mht, .mhtml, .html, .htm
Outlines - .rtf, .txt, .doc, .wpd, .docx, .docm, .wps
