How to restore the Windows 95/98/98SE/Me registry using the pcAnywhere registry backup
You have installed pcAnywhere and need to restore the registry back to before pcAnywhere was installed.
The Windows 9x/Me registry consists of two files: System.dat and User.dat. During installation, pcAnywhere makes a copy of these files, naming them System.pca and User.pca. Different versions of pcAnywhere store these backups in different locations. Use the appropriate path when locating these files.
pcANYWHERE32 7.x ..\Windows
pcANYWHERE32 8.x ..\Program Files\pcANYWHERE
pcAnywhere 9.x ..\Program Files
pcAnywhere 10.0 ..\Program Files
Restoring from the pcAnywhere backups
1. Click Start, and click Shut Down.
2. Check "Restart in MS-DOS mode" and then click OK. Windows will restart, without a graphical interface, to a DOS prompt.
3. To change to the Windows directory, type CD \WINDOWS and press Enter.
4. Change the attributes to the current registry files by typing the following, pressing Enter after each line:
ATTRIB SYSTEM.DAT -S -H -R
ATTRIB USER.DAT -S -H -R
This changes the attributes so that you can overwrite the current registry files.
5. If the pcAnywhere registry backup files are not in the Windows folder, then copy those backup files by typing the following, pressing Enter after each line:
COPY c:\progra~1\SYSTEM.PCA SYSTEM.DAT You will be prompted to overwrite. Press Y to overwrite.
COPY c:\progra~1\USER.PCA USER.DAT You will be prompted to overwrite. Press Y to overwrite.
6. This will copy the pcAnywhere registry backup as the current backup.
7. Change the attributes of the current registry files back to their original setting by typing the following:
ATTRIB SYSTEM.DAT +S +H +R
ATTRIB USER.DAT +S +H +R

is unsatisfactory, you can return to your previous registry by restoring the
backup you saved to your desktop. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Restart the computer.
2. If you are running Windows 98, hold down the Ctrl key.
If you are running Windows 95, wait until you see "Starting Windows 95", and
then press F8.
3. The Windows startup menu will appear. Select "Command prompt only", and press
Enter.
4. At the DOS prompt, type cd \windows\desktop and press Enter.
5. Type regedit .reg and then press Enter. The saved
registry is imported as the current registry.
6. Restart the computer by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del.
