How to fix runtime error 3433 excel engine registry?

When you import data from a text file, or export data to a text file by using the Text ISAM, you receive the following error message (See, Common registry problems):

Run-time error '3433'
Invalid setting in Excel key of the Engines section of the Windows Registry.

About Text ISAM

The Text ISAM allows you to manipulate text files without checking the file name extension (See, How to Fix Invalid File Associations Problems?). This creates a potential security risk because it can be used to read or write to a system text file.

Jet35sp3.exe was updated on October 11, 1999. If you previously installed this update and would like to use the stricter security control provided in the updated MSText35.dll (See, How to fix dll errors?) run the installed MSText35.REG file. To run the Mstext35.reg file, locate the file on your system and double-click it.

Cause of Run-time Error 3433

1. The DisabledExtensions value in the following registry subkey
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Jet\4.0\Engines\Text
contains an extension that is five or more characters long.

For example, abcde causes the problem if the registry value is the following:
!txt,csv,tab,asc,htm,html,abcde

2. Microsoft Jet 4.0 Service Pack 3 (SP3) or Service Pack 4 (SP4) is installed, or you are running Microsoft Windows 2000.

Solution for Run-time Error 3433

To resolve this problem, install the latest Jet 4.0 service pack.

To work around this problem, use only the first four characters of any file name extensions in the DisabledExtensions registry value. For example, if abcde appears in the list of file name extensions

!txt,csv,tab,asc,htm,html,abcde

change the registry value to: !txt,csv,tab,asc,htm,html,abcd.
