If your fingerprint reader is displaying a status of unavailable in the Biometric Devices Control Panel, it could be because of one of the following reasons:
* The fingerprint reader is currently busy because it is being used for enrollment. If you are currently enrolling fingerprint data with a device, it will show as unavailable. You will be able to use the device once fingerprint enrollment is complete.
* There's a problem with the fingerprint reader. It's probably a problem with the driver. You can try to fix this by re-installing the driver.
To re-install the driver
Before following these steps, make sure you have a copy of the driver. The driver should be on a CD/DVD that came with the fingerprint reader or your computer (if the device came with your computer). You can also download the driver from the computer or fingerprint reader manufacturer's website, or check for an update through Action Center or Windows Update.
1. Open Device Manager by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Security, and then clicking Device Manager. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an
administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
2. Locate your fingerprint reader and double-click it.
3. Click the Driver tab, click Uninstall, and then click OK.
4. Install the driver for the device from the CD/DVD or the file that you downloaded from the Internet.
You are viewing the Biometric Devices Control Panel remotely. You cannot use a fingerprint reader remotely.
