Troubleshooting Graphics Corruption in Games

RegistryBooster 2010 - You no longer need to guess! This free stability scan will help you clean, repair and optimize your system in an easy way.

This article provides troubleshooting steps to help resolve any display corruption that may occur when running Games or Windows. In most cases, updating the display drivers should resolve the issue. Before continuing or contacting ATI, please download and install the most current display driver for your product.

Missing textures, scrambled video display, flashing areas, or a solid colored screen are common symptoms of graphics corruption. This is usually the result of the game using a graphics feature that is not supported by the video card (graphics adapter), an issue with the game, or a display driver issue.

Diagnosing Graphics Corruption in Games

Running any game on systems that do not meet the minimum requirements may result in instability, graphics corruption, and/or severe performance problems. Please check with the game developer/publisher to ensure that the system meets the minimum requirements of the game.

The following steps should be used to help resolve the issue:

1. Review the Games Knowledgebase section to see if this is a known issue with this particular game.

2. Does the corruption occur after task-switching to and from the desktop (Pressing Alt-Tab while in the game)? This is a known issue with several game titles. More information can be found in our Games Knowledgebase.

1. Update to the latest graphics display driver. In most cases, the graphics corruption may already have been resolved with an updated display driver.

To check your display driver version, please follow the steps below:
    1. Right-click anywhere on the Desktop, and select ATI CATALYST Control Center.

    2. This will open the ATI Catalyst Control Center.

    3. Expand Information Center within the Graphics Settings Tab, and then select Graphics Software.

    4. Check the version of the Catalyst display driver.

3. Check the game manufacturer's website for any game updates, patches, or known issues. If unable to locate the information, please contact the game manufacturer directly to report this issue.

4. Check the in-game options screens to turn off features that are not supported by the video card (graphics adapter).

5. Check to make sure that the DirectX version installed is compatible with the game. To do this, contact the game manufacturer. If you have an older version, please update to the latest version of DirectX from Microsoft. Most games include the version of DirectX that they require on the game CD.

To check the version of DirectX installed, please follow the instructions below:
    i. From the Windows Taskbar, select "START" then "RUN".

ii. The Run dialog box will then open.

iii. In the Open field type "DXDIAG" and then select "OK".

iv. This will then open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool dialog box.

    v. The DirectX version can be found at the bottom of the list within the System Information section of the System tab.

6. Try reducing the display resolution within the in-game display options to 800x600 @ 60hz, and then re-launch the game.

7. In most cases, over clocking your graphics card and CPU can result in some form of graphic corruption if not cooled properly. Please ensure that the system and graphic card temperature settings are not at extreme levels. This will not only display graphic corruption, it will also damage your hardware.

8. If the option is available, try the video card (graphics adapter) in another machine with the same games. If the issue does not exist, there is a good possibility that there might be a software or hardware compatibility issue on your system.

A. Reduce system resources by limiting software and services being launched on start-up.
    1. From the Windows Taskbar, select "START" then "RUN".

    2. The Run dialog box will then open.

    3. In the Open field type "MSCONFIG" and then select "OK".

    4. The System Configuration Utility dialog box will launch.

    5. Select the "Startup" tab.

    a. The startup tab will list all applications that load on system startup.

    b. Make a note of all the startup items that are checked. Once you documented all startup items, select the "Disable All" button.

    6. Select the "Services" tab.

    7. Place a check in the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box.

    a. This will hide all Microsoft services and only list third party manufacturer services.

    b. Make a note of all the non-Microsoft services that are checked.

    c. Select the "Disable All" button. Doing this will uncheck all third party services.

    d. Select "Apply" and then "OK".

    e. Restart once prompted.

    f. Re-launch the game.

B. Eliminate any possible hardware compatibility.
    1. Power down your system and remove any PCI hardware installed (i.e. Modems, Audio/Sound Cards, Network, USB PCI, etc.).

    2. Power on the system and re-launch the game.

    3. If the issue persists, try swapping out your system memory.
