Drivers, as other system components, rely on the registry to store configuration information. The system itself uses the registry to store information about devices and drivers, and a driver can store additional information there for its own use.

In general, drivers and device installation components should use the registry to store data that must be maintained across restarting of the system. When you install a device driver or update an old device driver, you'd better use official driver.
