Strength:
Panda Antivirus 2007 is a lightweight program compared with other similar software, for it only takes up 33MB. It provides real-time protection and timely update. There is low system impact most of time so you may not worry about the interruption. Panda Antivirus 2007 could protect your PC against viruses and spyware, including heuristic protection against unknown threats; it also scans files on access, in incoming e-mail attachments, and when sent by IM.
Weakness:
The scanner was crashed by malware. Scanning is a little slow. It doesn’t perform well against some spywares and adware, which Lacks some expected features such as scheduled scans and quarantine, either. You have to reconfigure after installation because some very important features were turned off by default. The default settings could not provide maximum protection to users’ PCs.
Benefits
Actually, I was attracted by its price at first glance. This tool provides users a two-user license and contains the capability of anti-phishing—that is, we can have the software run on two computers!
This program protects not only viruses but also spyware, as well as the ability to scout phishing. Can I call it an economical shareware? As there are lots of anti virus programs which sell at a higher price than it.
We all know that there are more and more unsafe variables when we surf online—adware, spyware, track ware, malicious shareware, or phishing. What we need is an anti-virus and an anti-spyware instrument to protect our PC; a better choice is a program combining these two functions into one and Panda come up to our need, furthermore, it provides us a two-user license that we can install this program on two PCs.
So how well did Panda Anti-virus clean up the malware mess? Out of 16 spyware samples, it removed ten, missed two completely, and detected but failed to remove the other four—an average performance. The heuristic scan, which did catch one spyware malefactor missed by many other security products, helps a bit. Panda Anti-virus clearly isn't tuned to protect against commercial keyloggers, though. Of eight samples, it removed two, tried and failed to remove two more, and ignored the other four. Overall, that's a mediocre kill rate, and that two spyware threats caused the scan to hang up completely is dismal.
Panda Anti-virus was more successful at keeping malicious software from installing on a clean system. It detected all but three of 16 spyware installers and successfully blocked installation for all but one. Seven of the installers vanished before my eyes the moment I opened their folders—I like that! Another six managed to launch, but Panda Anti-virus detected the malware during the install process. Here again, it was less effective against key loggers. Just as before, it missed four, removed two, and tried unsuccessfully to remove two. Given Panda Anti-virus' antivirus roots, I had hoped for something closer to a clean sweep, at least against spyware threats.
According to some professional technician, panda anti-virus is a good recommendation for individuals who have a good understanding of security concerns. To me, however, it also fits layman, especially for a lazy person who does not want to update manually.
As I mentioned above, this tool could scan files on access, in incoming e-mail attachments, and when sent by IM. It’s good for careless man who does not know which is a virus link—if he clicks on some link which spreads virus through chat tools, the infected files will spread automatically. How dangerous could it be? The people on his chat list would also be infected. So Panda anti-virus is good at preventing such problem from our PC.
This version has the anti-phishing capability which is suitable for most common netizens, for anti-phishing means could protect your passwords safely. If you’ve suffered an anti-virus scanning, I mean, when it starts to scan, your system will be impacted by it; Panda Anti-virus has lowered the system impact which ensures you use your PC with little interruption.
There are several pities for disinfecting virus—your infected files only could be deleted, there is no quarantine option, either. It’s good for a lazy person, but I wonder if the stability is still on.
Setup
Most anti-virus programs are compressed as they are a little larger than common soft wares; however, Panda anti-virus is an extra one because of its small size. So you need not compress this tool by Winzip or Winrar. The installation speed will not let you wait for long--just follow installation wizard, all steps are easy.
There is not any malicious ware in it; we can install it with ease.
There is a quick door offered to uninstall the instrument, it’s very convenient for us to remove Panda anti-virus 2007. After the quick uninstall, we have to delete the empty folder left by the software.
Interface:
The standard two-pane interface shows objects in the left pane, and the results of selecting an object in the right pane. The interface is easy to operate, which is a good for greenhorns to begin with, as the settings require quite a bit of tweaking in order to get Panda working at top condition. Out of the box, Panda doesn't check email enclosures. Heuristic scanning isn't turned on by default, either; other settings will need to be enabled and tuned to meet your needs. Once configured, however, Panda does a very good job of finding known viruses and spyware. Scanning speed is fairly quick, and the real-time scanning that occurs in the background is unobtrusive, with little impact on system performance.
System Requirements
Panda anti-virus 2007 could run on Windows 98/2000/ME/XP, there is a special need IE 5.01 or later. The RAM requires at least 96MB and hard disc space is about 33MB to install it. There are no other requirements for installation.
Conclusion
As an anti-virus tool, Panda excels at preventing spyware and lots of viruses. This one performs in-the-middle-of-the-road among anti-virus programs: the app caught 90 percent of Anti-Virus-Test. Org's nearly 900,000-strong collection of malware samples, a detection rate that was dragged down by a relatively poor showing at catching Trojan horses (87 percent) and back doors (86 percent), two increasingly common types of malware. By comparison, top programs caught 96 percent. Panda ranked third in our tests for proactive detection, however, catching 56 percent of new samples with one-month-old signatures. Though the data seems dismal for Panda anti-virus 2007, we can know the status of it. There should be some means to restore flaws below:
1. A quarantine option is needed for advanced users.
2. Before deleting virus, there should be some euphemism to require if users would like to delete or quarantine the infected files.
3. Strengthen the functions of repair or anti-virus.
