Google Desktop Search, by Google, installs easily and quickly indexes files on your computer. Indexing is done when your computer is idle and even though I have a lot of files on my main computer,the indexing was very fast. You can use it to search your computer for email, text in Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations. You can have it index your entire hard drive or you can specify only certain folders to index.
Google Desktop Search has a feature called a Sidebar and it's slick. Both Google and a bunch of independent developers have created gadgets that you can include in your sidebar. I like the fact that it disappears off my screen until I want it. I also like that it provides me with the latest news so I can keep on top of things while I'm working.
Google Desktop Search also utilizes the sidebar gadgets so it can bring you weather, RSS feeds, a note pad, system resources, pictures off your computer, and plenty more. Last time I looked there were over500 gadgets to pick from. So, if you're looking for a way to search for things on your computer, and get a whole lot more, you owe it to yourself to check this out. Truly one of my Favorites of 2006!
