VLC used to stand for VideoLAN Client, but that meaning is now deprecated. It is a portable multimedia player, encoder, and streamer supporting many audio and video codecs and file formats as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It is able to stream over networks and to transcode multimedia files and save them into various formats.

VLC media player is its main software. It is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols.

It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.

The VideoLan project announce the latest version- VLC media player 1.0.0. This latest version can be supported by Windows, MAC and Linux ect. For the windows, this release only supports Windows 2000 and later. But if you are an user of window 95 of 98, you can use the version of VLC 0.8.6. But you need to download The Microsoft Layer for Unicode on Windows 95/98/Me Systems. And put the two MSLU files in the C:WindowsSystem folder.

For the MAC, the version 1.0.0 for Mac OS X is distributed as a disk image. Download the .dmg file, open it, and copy VLC to your hard drive (for instance the /Applications folder). Open VLC by double-clicking on it. But if you use the out-update you may encouter some mportant bugs or security holes. Take attention at this point.
