VideoLan is a softwre project, run by volunteers, which produces free and open source software for nultimedia, released under the GNU(General Public LIcense).
VLC media player is its main software. It is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols.
It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.
The VideoLan project announce the latest version- VLC media player 1.0.0. This new release introduces many new features, new formats and new codes to VLC multimedia framework and fixs a ver y high number of bugs that is present in the 0.9.x or 0.8.6 versions.
