How Spam Alarm Works for you!It'll be easier to use Spam Alarm if you know a little about how it works. Here's an illustration: As you can see, Spam Alarm and your email program work in similar ways: They both talk to the email server where your incoming messages are waiting. There's an important difference, however. When you check mail with your email program, it will download all new messages from the server and then delete them. Spam Alarm, on the other hand, only deletes messages that it believes to be spam. So why are we telling you all this? Because: You must let Spam Alarm filter your messages before you read them with your email program. If not, your email program may remove new messages before Spam Alarm has had a chance to filter them. Which means that you will get as much spam as before. Because of this, you should switch off automatic checking in your email program. Most of the time, you don't have to do anything at all. Normally, Spam Alarm runs in the background, checking your inbox every 10 minutes (you can change this if you want to). All you'll see is Spam Alarm icon in the task bar, that is, in the lower right corner of your screen. When you have new mail, the icon will start flashing. If you see this icon then it means that Spam Alarm is in Idle mode and does not do any spam filtering. There are two ways to activate the program: double-click on the icon or right-click and select "Open Spam Alarm" options from the pop-up menu.  You will see the main program window. To check email accounts for spam click the button "Check email accounts now" . If you would like Spam Alarm to clean your email accounts from spam automatically, then click the button "Check email accounts automatically every N minute(s)" . If this button is down then Spam Alarm will check your email accounts for spam periodically every 10 minutes (default value). Spam Alarm uses multiple threads when checking the email accounts for spam. It is possible to make any configuration changes while email checking is running. There are a few more things that you should know in order to get started with Spam Alarm. You already know that you can launch Spam Alarm from the pop-up menu. This pop-up menu also gives you the access to a number of useful commands.  As you can see, there are "Check email accounts now" and "Check email accounts automatically every N minute(s)" (looks like check-box) menu items. They provide the same functionality as buttons on the main window toolbar. Despite of Spam Alarm's powerful filters it is possible, that some of your legitimate email will be filtered as spam. To insure, that the important messages will not be lost, all messages that considered to be a spam are saved in the special folder "Spam" in the Spam Alarm installation folder if option Save deleted emails is "on". You can go to this folder at any time using "Show deleted emails" menu item (The similar button is available on the main window toolbar ). You can delete the spam messages from this folder using "Purge deleted emails" menu item . "Shutdown Spam Alarm" allows to terminate Spam Alarm. |
