Solution Guide: Backup VHS tapes to Mac computer.
Using Roxio Easy VHS to DVD for Mac to backup VHS to computer file, you will need the following
hardware and software:
1. Roxio Easy VHS to DVD for Mac kit (USB 2.0 video capture device included);
2. A VHS VCR or Hi8, Video8 analog camcorder;
3. Macintosh computer with a Dual Processor PowerPC G5, or Intel processor;
4. DVD recordable drive for DVD-Video creation;
5. 512MB RAM or more;
6. Available USB 2.0 port;
7. iMovie HD, 08, or 09.
Step 1: Install and run Roxio Easy VHS to DVD for Mac.
Insert the installation disc into your drive. If purchased online and
downloaded, double-click the downloaded .dmg file. After Easy VHS to DVD for Mac has installed on your Mac computer, there are two applications: Easy VHS to DVD Capture and Toast 9 Basic.

|
Step 2: Connect your VHS player to computer.
a. Connect the Roxio Video Capture USB device to a USB 2.0 port on your computer.
b. Connect the Roxio adapter to the video capture device.
c. Using the video cable provided with your Hi8 camcorder, connect the video Line Out connector on VHS player to one of the two video plugs on the Roxio adapter.
d. Connect the two Audio Out connectors on your VHS player to the audio adapter (red and white plugs) attached to your Roxio USB capture device.

Ensure the Roxio Video Capture USB device is connected to a USB 2.0 port on computer, and that your VHS player is connected to the Roxio adapter.
NOTE: The Roxio Video Capture USB device should be connected
directly to your Mac, not through USB ports on a Cinema

Step 3: Make a backup from VHS tapes to computer files.
You need to tell Easy VHS to DVD for Mac the length of the video you are capturing. This information is used to approximate the amount of storage that will be needed; it can also be used to automatically terminate the recording if you wish.
a. specify the recording quality.
Easy VHS to DVD for Mac lists two types of recordings. Standard recording uses a variable bit rate (VBR) to capture video at an average 4 Mbps. High recording extends the average VBR to 6 Mbps with a maximum capture rate of 8 Mbps. Both recording methods capture the video in MPEG-2 format, the same format used by DVDs.
b. select the input source, either S-Video or Composite.
Easy VHS to DVD for Mac shows a preview of what is being seen on the selected input, so you’re not likely to end up with a blank recording because you made the wrong selection.

c. you’ll be asked to confirm that audio is present.
You should be able to hear the audio and see the audio on the audio meters. You can’t make any adjustments to sound levels; you can only confirm that audio is present.
When you’re ready, press the big red ‘Start Recording’ button. You can also choose to automatically stop recording after the time you specified earlier.
When the video transferred from your VHS tapes to Mac as MPEG-2 video files, you can select one of the following options:
1. Send to toast (making DVDs); 2. Edit with iMovie; 3. Send to QuickTime player.

In summary, I think that Roxio Easy VHS to DVD is a neat little program, easy to install, easy to run, and sits at a really fair price level that anyone can afford. Given the potential expense of paying a service facility to do the VHS to DVD transfer for you, Roxio’s program does the perfect job, and will actually save you money in the long run.
