HandBrake is an open-source GPL-licensed video transcoder. This application can convert MPEG video (including DVD-Video) into a MPEG-4 video file in .mp4, .avi, .ogm, or .mkv containers.
HandBrake also features charpter selection and burning subtitle into the picture.
Supported sources:
Any DVD-like source: VIDEO_TS folder, DVD image or real DVD, and some .VOB and .TS files
Any input video file that is supported by the FFmpeg project. This includes nearly every .AVI and .MPG file found in the wild.
Outputs:
File format: MP4, MKV, AVI or OGM
Video: Theora, MPEG-4 or H.264 (1 or 2 passes or constant quantizer encoding).
Audio: AAC, MP3, Vorbis or AC-3 pass-through (supports encoding of several audio tracks).
Supported file types:
Input: DVD, DVD image, DVD VOB files, MPEG-TS, Matroska, AVI, mpeg-4 etc (version 0.9.3 allows mkv, avi, mpeg and more as input)
Output container formats: MP4, AVI, OGM, and MKV
Video Codecs: x264 (with H.264 output), Xvid and FFmpeg (with MPEG-4 ASP output)
Audio: AAC, MP3, Vorbis, and AC-3
