- MPEG-4 is an ISO standard used for video encoding. It is developed by MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group), the committee that also developed the Emmy Award winning standards known as MPEG-1 (VCD) and MPEG-2 (DVD). Any files with the extension .mp4 are encoded by using the encoding technique that conformant for MPEG-4 standard. You may learn more about MPEG-4 from, http://mpeg.chiariglione.org.
MP4 is a format that conformants for MPEG-4, and encoded by H.264. iPhone supports MP4.
- H.264 is known as MPEG-4 Part 10, or AVC (for Advanced Video Coding). It is a result of another international effort involving ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), and written as the product of a partnership effort known as the Joint Video Team (JVT).The encoding efficiency and image quality are better than MPEG-4.
