- Windows Media Video (WMV), being a popular codec for distributing video on the Internet, competes with other codecs such as RealVideo, DivX, Xvid, and H.264. Generally speaking, common usage of the term WMV refers to this codec only. WMV (*.wmv) files use Microsoft's ASF container format. These files can be played by Windows Media Player and other players such as MPlayer, VLC media player or Media Player Classic. Most BlackBerrys support WMV.
- H.264 is known as MPEG-4 Part 10, or AVC (for Advanced Video Coding). It is a result of another international effort involving ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), and written as the product of a partnership effort known as the Joint Video Team (JVT).The encoding efficiency and image quality are better than MPEG-4.
