Installing Window Washer

Depending on how you purchased Window Washer, you may be installing it from a CD or from a file you download from the WebrootŪ Web site.

Note icon Note: If you are upgrading from a previous version of Window Washer, you do not need to uninstall the old version first. In fact, installing the new version over the old one lets you automatically retain your Window Washer settings.

You can install Window Washer one of two ways:

    • Typical—Use this option to quickly install Window Washer using the configuration settings that Webroot recommends.
    • Custom—Use this option to select various configuration settings yourself.

Step Introduction icon To do a Typical Window Washer installation:

  1. Close all other programs that you have open on your computer.
  2. Start the installation program.
  3. To install from a CD
    To install from a downloaded file
    1. Insert the CD into your CD drive.
      • The installation options should display automatically. If they do not, use Windows Explorer to navigate to your CD drive. Then double-click install.exe to start the installation.
    2. Click Install Window Washer to start the installation.
    1. Follow the instructions on the Web site to download the file.
    2. Go to the file you downloaded.
      • If you downloaded the file to your Windows Desktop, close all open programs, and you will see an icon on your desktop for the file you downloaded.
      • If you downloaded the file to a different location, use Windows Explorer to navigate to the file.
    3. Double-click the file you downloaded to start the installation.

    • The License Agreement and Disclaimer window displays.
  4. Read the license agreement and you agree with it, click I Agree.
    • The Choose Your Installation Type window displays.
  5. Select the Typical Installation option and click Next.
    • The Installation Status window displays, showing the progress of the installation.
    • If you have Netscape installed, the Netscape Profile Scanner window displays. The Netscape Profile Scanner scans your computer for profiles you have set up for Netscape. The scan may take a few minutes. This option lets you select which Netscape profiles you want Window Washer to wash. If you want to skip this process now, you can use the scanner later. For more information, see Selecting Netscape Profiles to Wash.
    • If you do not have Netscape installed, go to step 8.
  6. If the Netscape Profile Scanner window displays, click Next start the scan.
  7. When the scan is complete, click Next.
    • The Netscape Profile Scanner lists the profiles it found. If you have not set up any profiles, only the default profile will be on the list.
  8. Select each profile you want Window Washer to wash and click OK.
    • A selected profile has a check mark in front of it. The Netscape wash options you select will wash each profile selected here. For more information, see Selecting Netscape Wash Items.
    • The Installation Status window displays, showing the installation progress.
  9. When the installation is complete, click Next.
    • The Custom Wash Item Detection window displays. This window shows which programs you have installed that have a corresponding Window Washer Custom Wash Item. The check mark next to the program shows that Window Washer will activate the Custom Wash Item automatically. When you run a wash, the Custom Wash Item will run, too.
  10. Deselect any programs whose Custom Wash Items you do not want to activate and click Next.
    • Window Washer will activate each Custom Wash Item that has a check mark next to it and use that Custom Wash Item when you run a wash. For more information, see Selecting Custom Wash Items to Use in a Wash.
    • If you are installing the trial version, the Email Support and Services window displays. Enter your e-mail address to receive useful tips, offers, and technical support by e-mail and click Next.
    • The Successful Installation window displays.
  11. Click Finished.

  5. Select the Custom Installation option and click Next.
    • The next installation window displays, with options for you to select.
  6. Select the installation folder and options you want.
  7. Select or deselect the options you want and click Install.
  8. Click to see a description of each option.

    Current Window Washer Installation Location
    For most users, we recommend letting Window Washer install to the default location that displays.
    Wash AutoComplete Form Data (Internet Explorer)
    Wash Form Manager Data (Netscape)
    This data contains lists of information that you recently entered into forms on Web sites using either Internet Explorer or Netscape. You see the information only when you visit a Web site and start entering the same information, for example your e-mail address or password, and the information automatically displays as you start to type. This may include user names and passwords you have set up for Web sites that you access. This option deletes the list of recently entered form data from your computer.
    Create Desktop Shortcut
    This is adds a Window Washer shortcut to your computer desktop. You can then double-click the shortcut icon to start Window Washer.
    Run Custom Wash Item Detection
    This option lets Window Washer detect other programs that are installed on your system for which Webroot Custom Wash Items exist. A Custom Wash Item is a set of Window Washer settings that removes files containing your recent activity for a specific program. For more information about Custom Wash Items, see Working with Custom Wash Items. If you skip this option or want to run it again later, see Activating Webroot Custom Wash Items.
    Create Start Menu Shortcuts
    This adds Window Washer to your Start menu.

    • The Installation Status window displays, showing the progress of the installation.
    • If you have Netscape installed, the Netscape Profile Scanner window displays. The Netscape Profile Scanner scans your computer for profiles you have set up for Netscape. The scan may take a few minutes. This option lets you select which Netscape profiles you want Window Washer to wash. If you want to skip this process now, you can use the scanner later. For more information, see Selecting Netscape Profiles to Wash.
    • If you do not have Netscape installed, go to step 10.
  9. If the Netscape Profile Scanner window displays, click Next start the scan.
  10. When the scan is complete, click Next.
    • The Netscape Profile Scanner lists the profiles it found. If you have not set up any profiles, only the default profile will be on the list.
  11. Select each profile you want Window Washer to wash and click OK.
    • A selected profile has a check mark in front of it. The Netscape wash options you select will wash each profile selected here. For more information, see Selecting Netscape Wash Items.

  12. When the installation is complete, click Next.
    • If you selected the Run Custom Wash Item Detection option, the Custom Wash Item Detection window displays. This window shows which programs you have installed that have a corresponding Window Washer Custom Wash Item. The check mark next to the program shows that Window Washer will activate the Custom Wash Item automatically. When you run a wash, the Custom Wash Item will run, too.
    • If you did not select this option, go to step 12.
  13. Deselect any programs whose Custom Wash Items you do not want to activate and click Next.
    • Window Washer will activate each Custom Wash Item that has a check mark next to it and use that Custom Wash Item when you run a wash. For more information, see Selecting Custom Wash Items to Use in a Wash.

  14. Click Finished.
