About FLV Format
FLV is short for Flash Video. It is a file format that is used to deliver video over the Internet using Adobe Flash Player (version 6-10). From version 9, Adobe Flash Player supports H.264 video and HE-AAC audio with very high definition.
Notable users of the Flash Video format include YouTube, Google Video, Yahoo! Video, Reuters.com, and many other news providers.
FLV codecs:
H.264
H.264 is the next-generation video compression technology in the MPEG-4 standard, also known as MPEG-4 Part 10 (ISO/IEC 14496-10). H.264 delivers excellent video quality across the entire bandwidth spectrum — from 3G (Mobile phones) to HD (Broadcast) and everything in between. H.264 is now mandatory for the HD-DVD and Blu-ray specifications (the two formats for high-definition DVDs) and ratified in the latest versions of the DVB (Digital Video Broadcasters) and 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) standards. Numerous broadcast, cable, videoconferencing and consumer electronics companies consider H.264 the video codec of choice for their new products and services, including Apple, Sony, Nokia, SanDisk, Palm, Blackberry and even Microsoft.
H.263
H.263 is a video codec standard originally designed as a low-bitrate compressed format for videoconferencing. It was developed by the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) in a project ending in 1995/1996 as one member of the H.26x family of video coding standards in the domain of the ITU-T.
VP6
TrueMotion VP6 is a video codec developed by On2 Technologies as a successor to earlier efforts such as VP3 and VP5. The VP6 codec has been used in products for broadcasting in the field, such as with BBC reporters and QuickLink software. This codec is used by Adobe Flash and Flash Video files. It is also stated as Flash 8 in this document since it is supported from Flash Player 8.
VP6 with alpha
It means the FLV is encoded with VP6 codec with alpha channel. The alpha channel is really a mask -- it specifies how the pixel's colors should be merged with another pixel when the two are overlaid, one on top of the other. It can be used to make some special effects on Flash videos.
Sorenson Spark
The Sorenson codec (also known as Sorenson Video Codec, Sorenson Video Quantizer or SVQ) is a digital video codec devised by the company Sorenson Media. It is used in Apple's QuickTime and in Adobe Flash (formerly Macromedia Flash).
Nellymoser
Nellymoser, Inc. is a privately held company that specializes in mobile computing. Its main products include the Nellymoser Platform and Media On-Demand, Music Companion & Infotainment On-Demand Mobile Advantage Packs. FLV encoded with Nellymoser means the FLV is encoded with Nellymoser audio codec. This is a single-channel (mono) format optimized for low-bitrate transmission of speech.
