Staying connected to sites with Smart Keep Alive

You can maintain connections even when you aren't transferring files by using the Smart Keep Alive (SKA) feature. SKA sends commands at random intervals to the FTP server, which maintains an active connection.

 

To turn on Smart Keep Alive

1. From the menu bar go to Tools > Global Options.

2. In the Global Options box expand Connection.

3. Click Smart Keep Alive.

4. Select the Enable Smart Keep Alive (SKA) check box.

5. Click OK.

 

To turn off Smart Keep Alive

1. From the menu bar go to Tools > Global Options.

2. In the Global Options box expand Connection.

3. Click Smart Keep Alive.

4. Clear the Enable Smart Keep Alive (SKA) check box.

5. Click OK.

 

Customizable settings in Smart Keep Alive (SKA)

• The time SKA waits before starting  

• How long SKA will run

• When SKA commands are sent

• Which SKA commands are sent

• Automatically reconnect

• Reconnect with a new IP address

 

To set the time SKA waits before starting  

1. From the menu bar go to Tools > Global Options.

2. In the Global Options box expand Connection.

3. Click Smart Keep Alive.

4. Enter a value between 0 and 1000 in Start SKA ____ seconds after the last command. CuteFTP Pro will begin using SKA after the specified idle time.

5. Click OK.

 

To set how long SKA will run  

1. From the menu bar go to Tools > Global Options.

2. In the Global Options box expand Connection.

3. Click Smart Keep Alive.

4. Enter a value between 1 and 1000 in Maintain SKA for ____ minutes.

5. Click OK.

  

To set when SKA commands are sent

1. From the menu bar go to Tools > Global Options.

2. In the Global Options box expand Connection.

3. Click Smart Keep Alive.

4. Enter values between 0 and 1000 in Send command at random intervals between ____ and ____ seconds.

5. Click OK.

   

To set which SKA commands are sent

SKA sends commands from the Commands list in random order.

1. From the menu bar go to Tools > Global Options.

2. In the Global Options box expand Connection.

3. Click Smart Keep Alive.

4. Click Add and type in another command to add a command to the list.

OR

• To remove a command, highlight a command in the list and click Remove.

5. Click OK.

 

To set CuteFTP to automatically reconnect  

If the server terminates the connection, CuteFTP Pro will automatically reconnect to the FTP site.

1. From the menu bar go to Tools > Global Options.

2. In the Global Options box expand Connection.

3. Click Smart Keep Alive.

4. Select If disconnected, auto-reconnect within ___ seconds.

5. Enter a value between 1 and 1000 in the spin box, to set how long CuteFTP waits before reconnecting.

6. Click OK.

 

To reconnect with a new IP address

1. From the menu bar go to Tools > Global Options.

2. In the Global Options box expand Connection.

3. Click Smart Keep Alive.

4. Select the Obtain a new IP Address when reconnecting check box.

5. Click OK.

Note: This feature only works with dial-up internet connections.  To obtain a new IP address CuteFTP Pro will disconnect from the Internet and then reconnect before reconnecting to the specific site.
