Settings of Advanced Registry Optimizer

Advanced Registry Optimizer allows you to configure settings as per your requirement for best and optimum output. The three tab sections are as below:

Registry Optimization Settings

By default all the Registry areas are selected for scanning, however, you can unselect an area by un-checking the mark against it. Thereafter, click on the Apply button. Pressing the Restore Defaults button lets you reselect all the areas excluded earlier from the scanning process.

Advanced Registry Optimizer scans the bellow mentioned areas in Registry for errors:

Registry Areas

Impact on system

ActiveX and COM

An ActiveX control is a component program object that has a set of rules for how programs should share information. ActiveX and COM components are installed on the system when you browse the Internet or even install any application. These are easy vehicle for spyware and adware distribution. These entries not always act as spyware but increase the size of the Registry or can be a cause of malfunctioning of some programs. Invalid COM or ActiveX object entries in the Windows Registry can cause application failures, document and information loss, and system crashes.

Application Paths

When disk path information is not correct in the Registry, this may cause programs to fail. These are the paths which are not removed when programs are uninstalled or paths which are created by applications and the physical path is removed leaving a invalid application path in the Registry.

File Types

There are many programs installed on the system and have many types of files which are associated with these programs. Invalid file type entries occur when some file types refer to programs that are no longer available on your system.

Fonts

It is often seen that applications specially word processing applications generate errors or crash due to corrupt fonts or invalid fonts entries. This is due to an invalid font entry in the Registry which is no longer available on the system.

Help Files

When a program is installed it makes entries relating to the help files associated with it in the Registry. When this help file is deleted or moved from the folder where it was originally installed, it results in invalid Registry entry. This is the last thing you want for an application to crash when you are looking for help.

History Lists

Windows maintain a list of all the files that you open recently, in the Registry. These entries help you to know the last files you used and lets you open these files quickly. These entries remain in the Registry even if these files are removed from the disk resulting in invalid Registry entries.

Shared Files

Registry includes paths of files and program libraries (dlls) that are used by multiple programs. These files could have moved or deleted physically from the disk resulting in invalid Registry paths.

Shortcuts

These are some shortcuts which are pointing to invalid targets. These entries point to paths which do not exist on the disk.

Software

Control Panel's 'Add and Remove Program' window lists all the programs installed on the computer. These are some software which do not have uninstall program but there are entries made about the uninstall in a special area in the Registry.

Sounds

These are related to sound files on a system. These sounds are played when certain events are fired on the system. There may be entries in the Registry which point to a sound file which no longer exits.

Start Menu

Start Menu provide quick access to some programs, if we remove or move the program from its original location or move the Start Menu folder, this will result in invalid Registry entry.

Startup

There may be some programs which are scheduled to be launched on Windows startup but are actually removed from the disk. This will result to invalid Registry entry.

Deep Scan

This scans everything in your registry hive Local_machine and will catch more errors than other scan. The downside is that it takes longer time to complete the scanning process.

Current User

This option scans for errors in HKEY_CURRENT_USER subtree that contains the user's profile for the user who is currently logged on to the computer. The user profile includes environment variables, personal program groups, desktop settings, network connections, printers, and application preferences.

Exclusion List

Advanced Registry Optimizer provides a Exclusion List which helps you to create a list of Registry paths which will be excluded from scan of invalid entries by the program. These paths will not be scanned by Advanced Registry Optimizer for invalid Registry entries.

You just need to click on Add Entry and select the section which you want to add in exclusion list. The drop-down list provides the name of the hives selected for exclusion list. To be more specific, mention the complete path of the Registry key in the next box given, Specify Registry Entry. You can even delete a entry from the exclusion list just by selecting the entry and clicking on Delete Entry button.

Skip errors due to removable media: When you install removable drives, it creates certain Registry entries. But if the drive is removed, Registry references will be invalid as it will link to the drive not found on your system. However, at a later time if you are certain to implant the same drive again, we suggest not to delete such Registry errors because in that case you will be needed to reinstall the drivers of the drive. Simply, check the option to skip Registry errors displayed in such condition.

Schedule

Advanced Registry Optimizer comes with a built in scheduler for launching Registry scan automatically. You can create schedule that will run itself for the first time or every day or every week.

Steps to create a scan schedule:

  • To create a schedule you need to select when you want the schedule to run (once, every day or every week).

  • Select accordingly the date, time, or week day when you want the schedule to run.

  • Click on Apply button to create the schedule.

These simple steps will create a schedule for the program to launch itself automatically and start scanning for the errors in Registry as per the specified time/date/day.
