Clever RSS Feed Reader

Shrook is a clever RSS feed reader that displays and organizes news in a smart (and customizable) way that can even learn from example. It's a pity Shrook lacks tools to put news in context and that its interface relies on a wide screen.

Shrook2.62 key features

Using the same Bayesian statistical filtering as Mail's Junk filter, Shrook's Learning Groups are able to pick out items of interest based solely on examples you provide. The system is smarter than setting up search keywords, since it can detect and ignore irrelevant results.

With Shrook, new items appear on your desktop just five minutes after they were published, quicker than any other news reader. This is down to Shrook's sophisticated Distributed Checking mechanism. Each time one copy of Shrook finds a new item, it tells the central server, which tells all of the other copies, including yours.

Shrook has the most comprehensive built-in podcast implementation of any Mac newsreader. When Shrook encounters a podcast, it is downloaded and added to iTunes. When you connect your iPod, not only does iTunes copy the audio, but Shrook downloads the text content of all your feeds to read on your iPod's screen, complete with links to access the audio.

Google Reader is a decidedly simple yet very usable and, thanks to a flexible labeling system, quite comprehensive web-based RSS feed reader. You can even share items easily right from within Google Reader. More automatic help with organizing would be nice.

NetNewsWire is competent and flexible RSS feed reader that combines Mac elegance with smart tools that help you follow news updates efficiently. Fast search and smart folders make getting to the important updates a snap (though NetNewsWire does not plug into Spotlight) and reading news in NetNewsWire is a pleasure indeed.

Cyndicate lets you organize news from RSS feeds in just about any manner you could like, and even knows (from your own past ratings) which stories you're likely to like in particular. Unfortunately, Cyndicate was a tad slow — too slow to really appreciate all its wonderful appeal.

NewsFire is an RSS reader designed with beauty and simplicity in mind. This makes NewsFire attractive, easy to use and very functional. The price you pay is in some advanced features the lack of which makes NewsFire best suited for finding, reading and then forgetting news, not for archiving and handling them.
