Uptime Checker

Uptime Checker is a network monitoring tool that can monitor up to 1,000 devices (with a suitable licence key) using a combination of SNMP, ICMP, HTTP, HTTPS and TCP layer-4 checks. The status of the devices can be viewed using the HTML pages that Uptime Checker generates. Alerts are available via email and syslog.

These are the device checks that Uptime Checker supports: -

  • SNMP
  • Using SNMP, Uptime Checker is able to determine the actual uptime of the device being monitored and will alert you should the device restart. Alerts will also be generated if the device becomes unreachable or if one of the other sys* SNMP parameters (sysDescription, sysName, sysObjectID etc) should change.

  • ICMP ?ping?
  • The ICMP check performs a simple ?ping? to a device and will generate an alarm if the ping time should exceed a pre-defined limit.

  • HTTP and HTTPS
  • The HTTP and HTTPS checks fetch a web page or file from a web server using the HTTP or HTTPS protocols and check the status of the request. Basic authentication using a username and password is supported so that Uptime Checker can also check the status of password-protected sites. It is also possible for Uptime Checker to check that the page returned includes a ?test string?. This allows Uptime Checker to check websites that always return a valid ?page not found? page, even if the actual requested page is not available.

  • TCP layer-4
  • With the TCP layer-4 checks, Uptime Checker makes a TCP connection to a specified port, 80 for HTTP for example, and will indicate if this is successful or not.

With this combination of device checks Uptime Checker can determine the status of virtually any device connected to the Internet!

Uptime Checker produces a number of HTML pages that are used to show the state of all monitored devices. The status of each device is represented using a simple ?traffic light? system ? green for reachable and red for unreachable. Other colours are used to indicate that a device has been restarted recently.

The devices that Uptime Checker monitors can be logically grouped so that various monitoring parameters such as SNMP community strings, timeouts etc are applied to all devices in that group. Uptime Checker will also produce separate HTML pages showing just the devices in each group.

Whenever Uptime Checker detects a change in the status of a device it will update the HTML alarm pages and can also produce an alert email or syslog message. Email addresses can be configured to receive either all alerts or alerts for a particular group of devices.

Uptime Checker runs as a system service on Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows 2003 and Windows XP.
Platforms supported:
Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003
