NewsWorthy for Thunderbird 1.5 will adds an extra tab to the Options dialog where you can turn off TB's annoying newsgroup name abbreviation, turn off the question for going to next unread message, and turn on persistence of news folder open/closed state, + more.
Adds a 'Mark all newsgroups read...' item to the right-click menu for newsserver folders.
