It started as a FTP client specialized for webmasters but now it has other useful features as well.
Here are some key features of "FTP Assistant":
Simple and Familiar user Interface - Main window looks like two Explorer windows, one for websites and the other for local disc contents. (click on the picture for a larger one)
Site Updating - FTP Assistant can determine which files should be uploaded using several customizable rules. Once the site is updated, FTP Assistant can open it in your browser and you can check if everything is OK. (Screenshot)
Site Cleanup - FTP Assistant can help you find and delete files on the server that are not found in the local directories. (Screenshot)
Link Testing - You can easily test local , external and news links. Link status results are cached in order to avoid checking links that have recently been verified. (Screenshot)
AutoPilot - Turn on the Autopilot and let it finish updating, close dial-up connections and turn off the computer. On next program start you will get a full log of autopilot's activities.
Command-line support - Using command line parameters you can start FTP Assistant in AutoPilot mode, let it update one or more sites and turn off the computer - you can use this feature with the Windows task scheduler for scheduled site updates.
FTP Macros - Record or write your own sequence of FTP commands and execute it whenever you want!
Caching - Site's file and directory structure is cached, allowing quick browsing of the server directories. This information can be refreshed at any time, either for a single directory or by scanning the entire site.
HTML Compression - FTP Assistant can compress (optimize) HTML files 'on-the-fly'. File size can sometimes be reduced by more than 30% although a realistic average is around 10%, depending on how HTML files are written. More on compression here.
GIF Optimization - You can also optimize all gif images. Their size will be reduced but image unaltered. Reduction depends on the program used to create the image.
Multiple Connections - You can use several FTP connections and update different sites simultaneously.
Customizable program settings - There are many options that allow you to customize FTP Assistant - click on the sceenshot link to see them in a gif animation (wait for all animation frames to be loaded).
Limitations:
only one website can be defined
only the site's root directory will be considered for site updating, cleanup and link testing.
