Path of Least Resistance - There are several tasks that need doing and different paths to take you there. Weigh your options carefully before expending precious resources. Sometimes you can hold off on building a saw mill in a level if there are a lot of logs to chop and wood piles to collect, other times this is your most precious resource and there is not much to be found.
Go Into the Light - Sometimes you'll notice objects will start glowing. Objects will grow when they are available for use. You will still need to make sure you have enough resources to complete a task, but this will help you get an idea of what you have left to do.
Busy Work - Waiting for your resources to build up can waste precious time. Try to have your workers doing something at all times and balance multiple tasks at once. You will also want to make sure you build up some resources before adding more workers. If you don't have enough food then they won't be able to do the work anyway.
