Method 1: Right click your .avi file, and click "Play with VLC media player". If there is no "Play with VLC media player", click the "Open way", choose "vlc media player".

Method 2: Make vlc media player running. Click "Media", choose "Open File...", then find your MPEG file.

Method 3: Open VLC media player. Click "Advanced Open File..". In the File Selection pannel, click "Add" button,            find your avi file. Your MPEG file will appear in the text box. Then click "Play" button on the bottom of            this dialog box.
