3GP is a multimedia container format defined by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) used on 3G mobile phones but can also be used on some 4G and 2G mobile phones. 3GP file stores video streams as MPEG-4 Part 2 or H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 10 (AVC/H.264), and audio streams as AMR-NB, AMR-WB, AMR-WB+, AAC-LC or HE-AAC.
File extension .3GP is a simplified standard of the MP4 standard that was designed to help decrease the amount of storage that is required and reduce the bandwidth requirements that are established in order to be able to accommodate for mobile phones. 3GP files are able to store and transmit the most significant bytes in priority and they also contain the descriptions of the image sizes. Two different formats are included with 3GP file formats:
* 3GPP - this is used for GSM phones and these files may have the extension of .3GP
* 3GPP2 - this is used for CDMA phones and may have the file extension of .3G2
Both of those file types are built on the standards of MPEG-4 and H.263 video formats and the AAC and AMR audio formats.
