Buying and selling for a profit would be pretty easy, but things are a little more complicated. There are forces at work against you, some who are trying to rid the streets of your kind, and others who simply want to control the streets themselves.

About Encounters and Conflicts

An 'encounter' occurs when some event happens in the game. An encounter can range from some faction (such as cops or mafia), to special events, like receiving an offer to buy some product at a special price.

During the game, you'll be notified of encounters by a window which appears. Some encounters are quick and easy (such as being offered a special deal), while others require action on your part, such as cops and gangs.

When you encounter certain types of factions, you have options on how you react. When this occurs, you are engaged in a 'conflict.' How you handle the conflict can have a dramatic effect on your game (it can sometimes result in the death of your character).

If you are lucky, you may get advance warning about possible encounters from an informant, or as a tip when you transact business.

Types of Encounters

There are five major types of encounters, described below.

The Cops Every location has a police force. Since you are a drug dealer, and dealing drugs is illegal, bad, and socially frowned upon, the police will try their best to put a stop to your drug trade. Different cities have different police forces, and you can expect the different cops to provide varying levels of resistance to your efforts.

Mafia Enforcers You're in business to make money, and so are other people. You may encounter members of a locations organized crime syndicate, who feel that your presence takes away from their own 'business.'

Gangs No matter which street corner you're standing on, it is likely that someone calls it their own. Don't be surprised if you run into some gangs who don't care too much for you dealing on their turf.

Loan Sharks If you owe somebody money, eventually they'll come looking for it. If you don't have the cash to pay up, be ready to take a beating.

Non-Conflict Events From time to time, you'll run into people who are not trying to stop you, but rather want to make some quick money off your efforts. You may find yourself offered a special price on some product, or a great deal on selling some of your inventory.

Violence Setting

While Drug Wars - Underworld is intended for a mature audience, we recognize that not all players care for the violent aspect of the game's encounters. By default, violence in the game is turned off. You can enable or disable the game violence in the preferences.

When violence is turned off, weapons and ammunition are not available in the store. During conflicts, the 'fight' option is replaced by 'Talk Down.' In this case, you do not try to kill your opponents, but instead you try to talk them down. The mechanics of the conflict are exactly the same. The only changes are the lack of weapons, and the wording used.

Talking down your opponents (and being talked down yourself) is mentally exhausting, and takes its toll on your character's health.

Running Away

During a conflict, you have the option to run away. Running away isn't cowardly...sometimes it is the best thing to do. When you attempt to run away, your opponents will try to stop you. They will consider your attempt to flee as a hostile act, and will react accordingly. If you are carrying product, you also have the option to drop your product and run away. In many cases, where your opponents are trying to stop your drug trade, dropping your product makes it easier to get away.

Fighting / Talking Your Way Out

When you choose to fight your opponents (or talk them down, depending on your violence setting), you are, in a sense, taking up arms against a sea of trouble. In most cases you will be out-numbered and out-gunned.

When you choose this option, you strike out against your opponents. If you have thugs by your side, they will assist you. Rest assured that this will result in retaliation from your opponents, who will not hesitate to fire back.

If violence is enabled, you have the ability to choose your weapon using the Select Weapon button.

Bribes

With some encounters, you have the option to bribe your opponents. Sometimes, bribery is a great way to get out of a situation cleanly. Sometimes, it is a deathwish. Your opponents may or may not take your bribe (the higher the bribe, the more likely they are to take it), and they may see your bribe as a hostile act.

Surrendering

Surrendering is always an option, but seldomly a desirable one. Surrendering to the cops usually means that you get arrested. Surrendering to other factions can have a variety of effects. Sometimes, however, it is wiser to live and fight another day.
