Musicmatch, based in San Diego, features a streaming music subscription service, On Demand, in September, 2003, launched its own music download service, Musicmatch Downloads.

MatchMusic

The Musicmatch was founded in 1997, offers the Windows software that ships with Apple Computer’s IPod music player, as well as Musicmatch Jukebox software, for users to play, burn onto CD, download, and organize a digital music collection.

In 2004, The MatchMusic was bought buy Yahoo! Yahoo acquired the digital music software and services provider Musicmatch in a cash deal valued at $160 million.

The history of Musicmatch
With more than 800,000 songs, Musicmatch’s once catalog is similar in size to iTunes’. Unlike BuyMusic’s erratic pricing, Musicmatch delivers on its 99-cent-per-tune guarantee, which is the same as Apple’s service. Most albums cost $9.99–the same rate iTunes Music Store charges. The songs are secure WMA files encoded at 160Kbps, which sound approximately as good as Apple’s 128Kbps AACs, although, to a certain extent, that’s a matter of preference. Musicmatch has one leg up on Apple, in the form of its revamped built-in personalization technology, which recommends similar artists based on your music selections. Users may … purchase gift certificates ranging from $10 to $300.

Musicmatch’s take on the iTunes Music Store concept was first announced in July, 2003. The scheme will see a range of songs offered for a one-off payment. Songs can be played on up to three PCs and can be copied to WMA 9-compatibled music players. Songs can be burned to CDs, but the same playlist can only be burned up to five times - Apple’s puts the limit at ten burns.
