Manage driver resources and multimedia settings in Windows 2000

This article describes how to configure multimedia settings and driver resources in Microsoft Windows 2000.

In Windows 2000, you can configure multimedia settings and driver resources in the Sounds and Multimedia tool in Control Panel.

To open the Sounds and Multimedia tool in Control Panel:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Sounds and Multimedia.
You can change multimedia settings and resources on the following tabs in the the Sounds and Multimedia tool in Control Panel in Windows 2000:
  • The Audio tab in the Sounds and Multimedia tool in Control Panel combines most of the functions of both the Audio tab and the MIDI tab that are in the Multimedia tool in Control Panel in Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Windows 98. There is no Custom Configuration option for MIDI in Windows 2000.
  • The Hardware tab in the Sounds and Multimedia tool in Control Panel contains a list of the following multimedia drivers:
    • Audio codecs
    • Game port
    • Media Control Devices
    • MIDI devices
    • Sound
    • Video codecs


  • The information that is on the CD Music tab in the Multimedia tool in Control Panel in Windows 95 and Windows 98 is now located on the Properties tab for the CD-ROM drive. To view the CD-ROM properties in the Sound and Multimedia tool, click the Hardware tab, and then double-click the CD-ROM drive.
To change a resource setting for a device, double click a device listed on the Hardware tab, and then click the Resources tab. The settings are the same settings that you can find on the Resources tab in Device Manager in Windows 95 and Windows 98.
