ATI driver installing problems
Error Message "No adapters were installed because compatible driver was not found" Appears When Installing an ATI Display Driver

Symptom:
This error may occur when installing an ATI Display Driver using the ATI SETUP program - No adapters were installed because compatible driver was not found.
Cause:
ATI supplies an installation utility with most driver releases. The setup program must check for and identify compatible ATI hardware in the system.
If appropriate hardware is not found, the setup program will not install the driver update.
There are three reasons why this error message might appear:
- The driver does not support the ATI hardware in the system.
- The driver only supports specific BUS types or other special system features.
- There are problems in the system that prevents proper identification of the ATI hardware.
Recommendations:
- The driver does not support the ATI hardware in the system. Double-check the display driver version to ensure it is appropriate for the ATI product and the operating system.
- The driver only supports specific BUS types or other special system features. Some releases are designed for very specific product configurations. Some may only work on AGP products, for instance. Others are built for specific OEM systems and may not support more generic hardware configurations. Please refer to the Catalyst Driver Suite Release Notes to ensure that the driver is supported by the graphics card BUS type.
- There are problems in the system that prevent proper identification of the ATI hardware
System Level problems may prevent proper hardware detection. Investigate the following items:
- Additional software components may be required. DirectX is a good example. If a specific version of DirectX is required, an update may be required. Contact Microsoft for the latest versions of DirectX
- Check and see if the motherboard chipset drivers are up to date. The motherboard chipset drivers should be installed and up to date otherwise, this can lead to instability. Please visit the motherboard manufacturer's website to determine what type of chipset the motherboard has and where the latest chipset drivers can be obtained.
- Hardware conflicts may exist, particularly if non-Plug and Play hardware is present. Use DEVICE MANAGER to check for conflicts
- Plug and Play may not work properly with some older versions of the system BIOS. Please visit the motherboard manufacturer's website for instructions on how to check the BIOS version and for tools that can be used to safely update the BIOS.
Additional Recommendations:
An automated installation of the ATI display driver is performed by InstallShield wizard. Most programs run through the Windows Installer which at times may corrupt the InstallShield. If the Installer is not reading the install script of the driver package, the drivers will not be installed and an error message might show up during the installation process
If this happens, manually install the driver using the Microsoft Windows Hardware Installation Wizard. A complete walkthrough guide can be found by searching for knowledgebase article: "Manual Display Driver Installation".
