The word iPod doesn’t exactly stand for anything, at least in the sense that it’s not completely an acronym.
IPod is a made up word, but that doesn’t mean that the name doesn’t have a meaning. The name breaks down into two sections, “i” and “pod.”
The “i” is a common part of names that Apple gave products at the time the iPod was released – iMac, iBook, iPhoto, iTunes, etc. Some say that “i” stood for “internet,” though that doesn’t quite seem to ring true in all instances.
“Pod,” according to some sources, stands for “portable open database,” the name of the software that runs the iPod.
Did you know, though, that the name iPod, was inspired by the movie 2001? .
So, there you go. Next time sometime asks you “what does iPod stand for,” you’ll have the answer. You’ll be a hit at parties or on trivia night.
