How to Play MKV files?
 MKV - Stands for Matroska Video File, is the matroska container format. Nowadays it is the generally video files, as well those containing audio (movies) or video only. MKV is similar in conception to other containers like AVI, MP4 or ASF. Recommended MKV Codecs
If you just want to convert mkv to avi without subtitle. You may select Video compressor and Audio compressor such as DivX XviD codec as you need. If you want to convert MKV to avi file with its subtitle, you must install MKV codec pack before you launch the program.

MKV Editors
Matroska Muxer - This a DirectShow muxer filter. To use in GraphEdit, connect the filters outputting compressed data to the in pins of the Matroska Muxer. Then connect the out pin to the File Writer filter. Its used in both ATV2000 and VirtualVCR for MKV capturing.
mkvtoolnix - THE standard matroska creation and editing tool, all recent builds supports the new lacing method, so make sure to have a recent splitter. The GUI is called mmg.exe, since 1.6.0 it is coming with a nice installer to make things easy for the user.
MKV File Format
