Toot!
Toot! is software for making rich résumés and portfolios.
A rich résumé includes examples of your work. Toot! exchanges the dry chronology of dates, companies, job titles and duties for an enriched resume with actual pieces of your work.
Those pieces can be presentations, reports, plans, lesson plans, budgets, schematics, art, music, dance - anything you can render in digital form.
A portfolio is a trove of your work, collected over time with reflections about each piece.
With Toot!, you can keep an on-going record of your life, including artifacts from all its aspects - work, education, hobbies, family, vacations, etc. When it comes time to create a résumé for a specific opening, you can select those pieces from your portfolio that best exemplify your qualifications for the position.
Toot! lets you prove your mastery of your field.
Main features of Toot:
The heart of a portfolio is the set of artifacts it includes. If you view Toot! as a portfolio, then you will understand that its purpose is to collect, house and present your artifacts.
But even if you view Toot! as primarily a résumé tool, artifacts should be important to you. It's the old thousand-words-per-graphic cliché - showing what you can do is much more powerful, has much more impact, than simply telling what you can do.
With Toot!, anything that is available as a computer file – or that you can make into a computer file – can be used as an artifact in your portfolio résumé.
If your occupation has published professional standards, you can use your Toot! résumé to demonstrate your mastery of them. Artifacts can play an important role here, as do courses you taken or taught, conferences you've attended, presentations you've made, projects and assignments you've completed.
Just as a paper résumé uses section headings to help organize the content and help the reader locate points of interest, a Toot! portfolio is divided into named sections. Every portfolio will have at least one section, but you can have as many sections as you want, organized as you please.
Toot! presents your portfolio as a sequence of views – of pages – of content. Each page is named and belongs to a section. You work with (and your viewers look at) one page at a time. If you've designed your portfolio well, that page presents a unified, cohesive message.
Just as you are free to specify and organize the sections and pages of your Toot! portfolio as you desire, so are you free to shape the content of each page.
The content of each page is presented as a collection of fields. More than twenty different types of field are available to you (as is evident from the Item Palette above).
You can build your portfolio using a template, in which case the pages will ome with empty fields pre-existing, waiting for you to enter your information and artifacts. Or you can use the item palette to place fields on a page, designing the page as you go. Or you can do a combination - start with a template, keeping what works for you, modifying fields that are close to your intent, deleting the rest.
