One of the important features of Microsoft Project Server is portfolio analysis using Portfolio Analyzer. Portfolio Analyzer generates multidimensional aggregations of project data stored in Project Server database allowing managers to explore and analyze complex information in simple visual interface.

The problem is that only a limited amount of project data is gathered and used for portfolio analysis, based on Microsoft's predefined algorithms.

In most cases during deploying Microsoft Project Server within a given organization it comes out that this predefined set of data collected does not allow performing portfolio analysis as required by corporate methodology. For example, you cannot analyze portfolio using bubble charts and you cannot use any custom fields defined in organization. There is a need to extend data used by Portfolio Analyzer.

Microsoft Project Server is a very flexible tool, which allows adding extra data to Portfolio Analyzer, but additional coding is required and this leads to time and cost expenses.
