WAV is a universal format which can be read on almost any audio software on all computer platforms, including MacOS and Linux.

MP3 is commonly used on personal portable audio players. It supports high quality compression. Many internet download sites use MP3 formats.

WMA (Windows Media Audio) is Microsoft's audio compression format. It is used on some portable audio players, and used for internet audio streaming.

OGG Vorbis is an open source audio compression format which provides similar quality as MP3, without the expensive loyalties.

Why do we provide audio-only AVI as an output format? If you are using video editing software on a different platform, like MacOS or Linux, your software may not take MP3 or WMA as input. Although WAV should be accepted without any problem, its uncompressed large size makes transferring files between platforms time-consuming. However, most likely your video editing software would take an audio-only AVI with compression as input.

Codec Control

With WAV, MP3, and audio-only AVI output, you have the full control over sample rate, channel, resolution (8-bit or 16-bit), and bitrate.

With WMA output, you have the choice of many pre-defined profiles, targeted at different usages.

Batch Converter:River Past Audio Converter is a batch converter. You can add a list of files, set the output format, and let it run. A well organized progress dialog will predict how long it takes to convert all the files, so you can do something else and come back when it finishes.

Hardware:River Past Audio Converter is tested to run on any PC with a Pentium III/Celeron CPU of 500 MHz or above. A sound card is required.
It may perform on a PC with lesser spec. However, we will not provide technical support if your PC is below the minimum specification we provided.

Operation Systems:River Past Audio Converter supports Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP.

DirectX:River Past Audio Converter requires DirectX 8.0 or above. We strongly recommend that you always use the latest the latest DX (currently 9.0b) because it provides better stability and performance.

WMF:For WMA output, you must have Windows Media Format runtime 9 installed. We provide it in a separate download package.

OGG filters:For OGG Vorbis output, you must have Tobias' OGG Vorbis DirectShow filters installed.
